About the test

Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme that is found in the liver, bones, gut, kidneys and in the placenta in pregnant women.

ALP is suitable for evaluating liver function and bone damage.

Increased values of ALP may indicate:

  • bile duct blockage;
  • gallstones;
  • diseases harmful to the liver tissue, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis and tumours;
  • use of medical products harmful to the liver, e.g., ketoconazole, phenobarbital and phenytoin;
  • chronic alcoholism and alcoholic cirrhosis;
  • osteoblast-active bone diseases – rickets, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, bone infection, impaired healing of fractures, bone tumours and metastases in case of, for example, breast or prostate cancer.

Lower values of ALP may indicate:

  • slowing down of bone growth;
  • underactive thyroid gland (hypothyreosis);
  • congenital phosphatase deficiency (hypophosphatasia).
