The test determines if you have contracted trichomoniasis. The result is based on sample material taken from the rectum. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.
When ordering the test, make sure you consider your personal sexual behaviour (vaginal sex, anal sex, oral sex), as in nearly 25% of cases the infectious agent can only be detected from a throat or rectal swab.
The symptoms of the most common sexually transmitted diseases often overlap. For this reason, we recommend that you order the test as part of the sexually transmitted diseases panel (rectal swab), and based on your sexual behaviour, combine it with the sexually transmitted diseases panel (throat swab), or sexually transmitted diseases panel for women or sexually transmitted diseases panel for men.
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infectious disease caused by a protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.
In women, the infection usually leads to vaginal inflammation, which is expressed by swelling and redness of the vaginal mucosa. Possible symptoms include itching of the external genital area, heavy frothy and smelly discharge from the vagina or urethra, and pain when urinating and during intercourse. About 25% of infected women do not develop any symptoms.
In men, trichomoniasis causes urethral inflammation. Typical symptoms include heavy transparent discharge and pain during urination. Most infected men do not develop any symptoms of trichomoniasis at all.
Usually, symptoms develop 5-28 days after infection.
Recovery from the disease does not give immunity to trichomoniasis, and it can be contracted again. As with any sexually transmitted disease, it is also very important to treat sexual partners.
The test should be ordered based on your sexual behaviour. In nearly 25% of cases the infectious agent can be detected from a throat or rectal swab.
The correct use of a condom is an effective protection against infection.
